General Information:
This is an exempt position that reports directly to the director of the Whitman Recovery Community Center.
Summary:
The Certified Peer Counselor/Program Manager is an exempt FTE, working 40 hours per week, with some variability in their schedule. The longevity of this position depends upon the continued availability of funding.
Job Summary:
The position serves a critical role in the success of Whitman Recovery Community Center (WRCC). This position is for a currently Certified Peer Counselor in Washington State who is actively working to become a Certified Peer Specialist in Washington state within 6 months of hiring date. This position will provide engagement and supportive services to WRCC participants utilizing case management, recovery support, and collaboration with local community partners, service providers, housing providers and other community resources. The position will work in collaboration with Whitman County Recovery Navigators who are on site at the WRCC location. This position also will recruit and manage WRCC volunteers, and supervise them within a tiered volunteer program. Additionally, this position will develop recovery programming for participants, including recruitment of mutual aid groups like 12 step groups to support recovery efforts. These groups will hold meetings on site. This position will also develop life skills classes and assist in the coordination of programming calendar and publicity for the WRCC.
Volunteerism is at the core of what the recovery community center does and central to the behavioral health recovery community we are building. The WRCC utilizes a tiered system of training that is linked to levels of responsibility and specified tasks. The WRCC program uses a parallel structure of staff working with dedicated peer volunteers in behavioral health recovery at all levels: governance, program, coaching, fundraising, etc.
Volunteer Development and Management duties:
· Recruitment, coordination, tracking and training of volunteers providing direct services to WRCC peers. This includes group and single person recruitment efforts.
· Identify needed volunteer positions and duties, training, and scheduling of volunteers for regular duties.
· Document volunteer activities on an ongoing basis.
· Work collaboratively with the WRCC director in identifying funding for volunteer program development and assist in grant writing to grow our volunteer programs.
· Work with the director, and other staff on the development of programs related to new and existing center programs.
· Pursue ongoing professional training in the areas of mental health and substance use disorders.
· Supervisory Responsibilities: This position shall be responsible for the recruitment and scheduling of volunteers and interns. This effort may involve the supervision of bachelor level student interns working with WRCC participants, or other volunteers related to the WRCC.
· Other duties as assigned by the Director.
Peer Specialist duties:
· Must share lived experience of recovery, or the criminal justice system, support the use of recovery tools and model successful recovery behaviors.
· Assist referred individuals in the process of recovery, help them build resilience, and provide hope that recovery is possible.
· Support, encourage, and model recovery and resilience from behavioral health disorders in ways that are specific to the needs of each individual.
· Advocate for the individual served with recovery support services, legal system and other community resources.
· Provide information and training in appropriate life skills.
· Assist in the development of information and support networks; connect with peers and community.
· Ability to utilize computer systems at WRCC and Latah Recovery Center.
· Comply with supervisory directive and WRCC/LRC policies and procedures.
· Communicate effectively with team members and community resource providers.
· Maintain confidentiality at all times and conduct self professionally and ethically.
· Demonstrate ongoing initiative and a “can do” attitude.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must have lived experience with substance use disorder, and/or the criminal justice system, and/or mental health and be at least 21 years of age.
2. Possess a high school degree or equivalent; bachelor’s degree in a behavioral science preferred.
3. Must have one year of active recovery and be able to demonstrate it.
4. Must be a Certified Peer Counselor in Washington State or actively working toward certification as a Peer Specialist in Washington state within six months of hire and understand implementation of recovery principles.
5. Palouse area resident preferred.
6. Satisfactory criminal background check.

• Residing in Whitman County is preferred to foster deeper community engagement and local partnership development.
